Churidar or the Churidar pyjamas are referred to as the fitting trousers which are worn by both the men and women usually in the Central and South Asia. They are considered to be one of the variations seen in the commonly worn Churidar having a narrow ankle and wide cut on the top portion. The contours of the leg are more revealing with the folding appearance at the end. Stretch is the major factor when sleekness is appeared at the end. While cutting, increased length is taken and then it is finished by tightly fitting with the buttoned cuff seen at the ankle. The increased length folds up and seems to be like a set of bangles which rest on the ankles.
The name Churidar was evolved from the word ‘Churi’ which means ‘bangle’ in India. While sitting, the extra folds found at the bottom makes the entire process more comfortable. This also helps in easy bending of the legs and thus sitting becomes comfortable despite the figure hugging design. The word Churidar is a Hindi term and it came into English only in the 20th century. Earlier the same attire was referred to as mosquito-drawers, long-drawers and even the Moghul breeches. It was named so by the British to denote this attire.
Churidar is usually dressed up along with a full sleeve top also known as kameez. It is also referred to as a kurta which is used mostly by men as well as women. The kameez is either stitched plain and in case of wedding receptions or parties, it is heavily embellished with stones and other embroidery works to add to the beauty. Slowly, it has spread far and wide to different parts across the globe. There are different materials with which Churidar is now made available like chiffon, silk, cotton, crape, nylon and other stuffs.
