The Salwar Kameez, Traditional, Popular and Practical

Posted by jasnav on February 18, 2008

The Salwar Kameez, also called a ‘suit’ is a traditional and popular dress of South Asians. It is the traditional dress of North India, Pakistan and even Afghanistan. The dress is so elegant, comfortable, graceful and functional that is has become popular all over, at places more than even the traditional sari. In Afghanistan and Pakistan it is worn by members of both sexes, but in North India it is generally worn by women.
The salwar is worn as a trouser which is loose and wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, or they maybe narrow and tight throughout, in which case they are known as churidars. The salwar is tied at the waist with a drawstring or an elastic band that allows it to be adjustable for all sizes. There are different types of salwars; the normal salwar with few pleats, the semi patiala salwar which has more pleats than the normal one and the patiala salwar which have lots of pleats and look very graceful. In some patiala salwars, nearly 4 meters cloth is used to give it a lovely, flowing look.
The kameez is like a shirt which maybe long or short, loose or tight fitting according to the choice of the wearer, which, of course, varies as per the fashion in vogue. It has slits on the side known as ‘chak’ which facilitate the movements of the wearer. Sometimes the slit can be in the front or at the back.
The salwar kameez can be made using any of a wide variety of suitable cloth. The cloth itself may be plain or printed. The shirts are decorated with embroideries, which may be done with thread, zari, beads, kundan, mirror work, kashmiri, or it can be dyed in different designs like tye and dye, batik, bandhini. lahriya etc. Ladies like to compare the quality of their suits and the embroideries on special occasions like weddings.
Women generally wear a ‘dupatta’ with salwar kameez. This is a long scarf a couple of meters long, and is used by Indian women to show their modesty by loosely covering the upper half of the body. It is worn around the neck and it is occasionally used to cover the head. This ritual is generally followed by Indian women when visiting a religious place, or to show respect to elders. The dupatta is dyed in different colors and designs.
Most good varieties of salwar kameez can be bought online from websites that specialize in Indian products, such as www.indianselections.com. The salwar can be used as a very useful and practical dress.

Preservation Of Saris

Posted by jasnav on February 13, 2008

Saris are an essential part of the wardrobe of any Indian women, and she takes great pains to see that no harm comes to her prized collection. The better ones last for decades, and are worn only on the most special of occasions. Why, I clearly know at least a few saris my mother still retains from her marital collection nearly half a century ago!
So let us see how to preserve these special pieces of garment.
Silk Saris
Expensive natural silk saris should be kept in a dry and dark part of the cupboard, wrapped in muslin or mul-mul cloth as it is also known. This allows some air to pass through while keeping out damaging moisture. While ironing them also special care should be taken as saris made from different materials need different temperatures, and so there is need to be careful about that or the sari will get damaged. Water should not be sprayed on certain saris while ironing like silk, satin, as it will leave stains on them.
Silk saris also should preferably be laundered at the drycleaners. They should also be stored in muslin cloth in a dark place so that they are not discolored.
Cotton saris
These saris need a lot of maintenance. They can be washed at home but a lot of care is needed because most colors in cotton like black, turquoise and navy blue, bleed. Hence, they should be washed separately, and not left immersed in water for long. They should be dried in the shade. A cotton sari looks graceful if it is starched properly.
Tissue and Organza
The Tissue and organza sari must never be left hanging for long else it loses its shape. They should be wrapped in muslin cloth separately and then stored. They should be refolded time to time so that tears do not appear on the creases. They should be dry-cleaned by a good laundry.
Chiffon and Georgette
Chiffon and georgette saris also need careful handling. They should also be laundered carefully, and they should not be wrapped too tightly and sari pins should not be used, as these saris are very delicate and may tear. The saris having heavy zari or embroidered borders should not be left hanging for long as the sari may tear.
Follow these simple tips to have your saris around you for the next half century as well!
